Topeka Public Schools board approves 2025–26 academic calendar after staff survey

The Topeka Public Schools Board of Education on Friday approved the district'025'026 academic calendar recommended by the calendar committee, following a staff survey that showed broad support.
Mrs. Wallace, who presented the committee ecision, said the survey closed last week with more than 1,240 staff members taking part and that 88% favored Calendar 1, the option in the board packet. Calendar 1 includes a week off at Thanksgiving and schedules teachers to return Aug. 5.
Board members asked for clarifications about how the calendar affects classified (support) staff pay and the treatment of inclement-weather days. Mrs. Wallace said committee members who represent classified staff will meet with Miss Sharp and others to determine how paid days in existing agreements are spread through the year. She said the adopted calendar counts 190 days (which includes professional development, teacher planning and parent-teacher conferences) and that inclement-weather days are built into that total. "If we use four or fewer of our inclement weather days, we'll get out at the earlier date," she said; using more days moves the end date later.
The board voted unanimously to approve Calendar Option 1 as presented and recommended by staff. No amendments or roll-call vote tallies by member were recorded in the meeting transcript.
The calendar takes effect for the 2025'026 school year; staff and affected employee groups will meet to finalize schedules and clarify pay/practice for classified employees under their agreements.
