Council approves state solar grant contracts for two city buildings
Summary
The council authorized execution of state Solar on Public Buildings grant contracts for two city-owned buildings located in Xcel Energy territory; staff said the city will own the systems at project completion and construction contracts will be brought forward next year.
Coon Rapids staff told the City Council that two city-owned buildings qualified for the state Solar on Public Buildings grant program and that the city received awards for both projects.
Staff said the projects were put out to bid, a contractor was selected, and the next step is to authorize grant contracts with the state so construction contracts can be presented to council in the new year. The staff representative said the grant program is limited to buildings in Xcel Energy territory; city hall sits in Connexus Energy territory and is therefore not eligible under the current program. Council adopted Resolution 24-116 approving the grant contracts and accepting the awards.
Council members noted that the projects will provide long-term offsets to city energy use but will not replace diesel generators for emergency power at some facilities. Staff said the city will own the solar installations at the end of the grant process.
What’s next: staff will finalize grant contracts with the state and return to council with construction contracts for each project.
