Holly James, identifying herself as a City of Everett resident and Snohomish County coordinator for Standing for Washington, addressed the commission during public comment to urge use of a recently approved local initiative (referred to in the transcript as “initiative 2,403”) to protect the Snohomish River and watershed.
“This law gives you the authority to stand up against developers who may push for projects that compromise our environment,” James said, urging the commission and city agencies to consider the initiative’s legal tools when reviewing development near the river. She described the watershed as a “vital natural resource for the health of our community” and said that implementation will take time and collaboration among stakeholders including the Department of Natural Resources.
James also cited environmental concerns raised by state agencies, noting the State Department of Fish and Wildlife had identified PBDE chemicals near the Everett Water Pollution Control Facility. She offered Standing for Washington’s support in helping Everett understand and implement the new law and provided the organization’s contact information.
Commissioners thanked James for the comment; no further questions or formal actions were recorded during public comment.
The commission proceeded to the evening’s scheduled business and staff presentation on the transportation element.
