Miss Adams, the district finance presenter, told the board that the audited fund balance increased by $7.4 million compared with the amount assumed in the adopted budget. "When you adopted the budget, we assumed that our fund balance, June 2025, would be $40,100,000. Our audited fund balance showed an increase of 7,400,000," she said, explaining that the district now conservatively projects a June 2025 fund balance of approximately $48,300,000.
The presentation outlined revenue increases of about $1.5 million and expenditure increases of roughly $776,000, driven in part by staffing costs (including administrators on special assignment, negotiations and substitute coverage) and one-time project spending moved from capital into the operating year. Adams said the district also recognized program savings of $6.7 million and returned a set-aside that was no longer needed back to fund balance.
Board members asked detailed questions about line items. Trustee Muskie asked whether food-service changes addressed an audit finding; Adams said that issue was separate. Trustees pressed on whether transportation and outgoing transfers reflected one-time project costs, and Adams confirmed the district is purchasing 15 new buses, with EPA bus rebates contributing to the changes.
After questions, Trustee Williams moved to approve Budget Amendment No. 1 as presented; the motion was supported by Dr. Cavanagh and passed by voice vote, recorded as 8–0. The amendment updates the district's adopted fiscal-year budget to reflect audited year-end balances and midyear program and staffing adjustments.
The board also approved related consent items and employment resolutions during the same meeting. The amended figures and the board's discussion will be reflected in the minutes and in subsequent committee reports as the district implements the changes.
