Roosevelt ASD playscape, HVAC repair and bus seat adjustment moved toward regular-meeting votes; board also discussed bond contingency

Staff recommended buying the playscape through the Sourcewell consortium and presented a total cost including equipment and labor of about $203,592. Staff emphasized the playscape will be fenced and dedicated to the ASD classroom to reduce elopement risk for very young learners; a general-use playscape for neighborhood students already exists on the Roosevelt campus. "This equipment is going to be specifically for our ASD or our autistic program for our kiddos," a board member said; staff agreed to place the item on the next regular-meeting agenda for a vote.
Bond contingency: Staff reviewed the Summer 2024 renovation closeout and proposed repurposing unused general-conditions and abatement contingency dollars and savings from move management to provide contingency for final closeout items. Brian Weber said staff were proposing conservatively to set aside up to $150,000 to cover potential outstanding contractor or inspection items; unused contingency would return to the bond owner's contingency.
Stevenson HVAC repair: Staff proposed a sinking-fund-funded repair to chiller components at Stevenson High School with an estimated cost of $59,822.37. The repair would extend the useful life of existing cooling components while the district plans for larger capital replacements; staff noted a 14'—16-week lead time for parts and recommended placing the repair on the next regular-meeting agenda for approval.
Holland Bus purchase: Staff reported that a prior quote from Holland Bus Company omitted seats on a wheelchair-capable bus. The vendor requested an additional $5,352 for seats, bringing that bus's total to $171,185; staff said they were comfortable recommending the additional authorization and will place the request on the regular-meeting agenda.
What happens next: Each of the items was moved to be included on the next regular meeting agenda for a formal vote; staff will return with full purchase and contract documents. The board and staff highlighted safety and compliance concerns (fencing for preschool-age ASD students, state playground guidelines for preschool areas) and confirmed plans to keep ASD equipment fenced and dedicated.
