Public commenter cites Open Meetings Act as board members defend committee process

A member of the public used the comment period to say the Wexford County Board of Commissioners routinely votes with "very little to no discussion" and urged the board to make deliberations public, citing the Open Meetings Act.
"The Open Meetings Act says that all votes must be made in public ... The public has no idea what's going on," the commenter (identified in the transcript as speaker 8) said, urging greater transparency and questioning whether board debates are occurring off the public record.
In response during the meeting, Unidentified Speaker 9 and other commissioners described the board as a committee-driven body and said much deliberation occurs in committees that are themselves open to the public. Unidentified Speaker 9 also noted limitations under the Open Meetings Act on answering questions during the public-comment period, saying it is "against the open meetings act to answer questions" in that forum.
The county manager also addressed operations, reporting continued effects from a recent cyber attack. The manager said teams are working to sort data and restore services and that temporary staffing had been approved for the registrar's office; he said he could not provide a firm timeline for full restoration.
The meeting included expressions of condolence for Kathy Klein, the county veterans administrator, who died unexpectedly; commissioners offered prayers and support for her family.
