Commission approves planning for second annual ADA anniversary event; seeks wider attendance

The Charleston City ADA Commission voted to begin planning a second annual Americans with Disabilities Act anniversary celebration and expanded outreach to community partners and media. Commissioners discussed possible dates, venues and strategies to increase attendance; July 26 (the ADA anniversary) was proposed as the date and Park Circle Community Center and North Charleston Park Circle were mentioned as potential venues.

Commission members said the first event was a smaller, drop-in-style gathering (estimates ranged from about 20 to 40–50 attendees) and urged scheduling the next event on a Saturday to make it more accessible for working residents. A commissioner who organized last year’s event described vendor participation and partnerships with Charleston County Parks and nonprofit groups, and said organizers will target more media coverage this year.

A motion to move forward with planning for the second annual event was made by a commission member and seconded; the motion passed on a voice vote after members present said "aye." The commission agreed the ADA coordinator and organizers will confirm venue availability, secure partners (including Publix for food logistics), register the event earlier than last year, and begin outreach to mayors and other officials to invite them to participate.

Janet, the ADA coordinator, said planning tasks will be included in circulated minutes and that the commission will schedule outreach to mayoral offices and City Council to align calendars. She also outlined a tentative monthly planning calendar leading to the July celebration. The commission emphasized the event’s role in public awareness, outreach and showcasing accessibility improvements.

The motion recorded at the meeting to begin planning the anniversary event was moved by a commission member and seconded by two other members; members voted by voice and the motion carried.
