The Summerville Design Review Board on Dec. 18 approved final design for a new press box and concession building at the Somerville High softball complex.
Design volunteers and LFK Architects presented a 728‑square‑foot building that replaces an older restroom and small concession structure. The new facility includes separate male and female restrooms, a larger concession area and a second‑level press box with sliding windows overlooking the field. The design uses smooth CMU at the first floor and Hardie products at the second; color and final paint choices will be coordinated to match the existing complex.
Volunteers emphasized that the facility will typically remain locked outside of regular softball season and events to limit vandalism; the concession stand will open only during regular season games, school‑sponsored tournaments and other authorized events. "There won't be any [air conditioning]... it'll be operated by box fans," a volunteer said, noting the modest scope of the concession operation.
Board members responded positively to the drawings and moved to approve; staff said the approval documentation will be provided to the applicant and that the town will issue the approval letter.
Next steps: staff will issue the formal approval and the design team will finalize paint and accent colors in coordination with the field complex.
