Bay City hands out holiday lighting awards and honors longtime public servants

The Bay City Commission spent the opening portion of its Dec. 16 meeting presenting holiday lighting contest awards and giving years-of-service recognitions to outgoing commissioners.
Mayor Jesse Dockett and several commissioners announced residential and business winners across the city’s wards, naming specific addresses and awarding $150 gift certificates to the grand-prize residential winner (712 South Jackson, Catherine Reham) and the grand-prize business (The Santa House). Commissioners noted a strong field of entries and encouraged residents to view the displays.
The commission then read a proclamation recognizing Kathleen L. Newsome for 33 years of service as mayor and commissioner and designated her an honorary citizen. The mayor noted a letter from Congressman Kildee, a portrait and a gift for Newsome. Newsome thanked the commission and the community during brief remarks.
The presentations were followed by routine business; the commission adopted the agenda, approved the consent agenda and moved into general remarks and substantive items.
The ceremony and awards highlighted civic engagement in Bay City and the commission’s effort to celebrate local volunteering and long-serving public officials.
