Jackson City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance No. 2024-9 on Nov. 26, lowering the age eligibility for the city’s youth council to permit middle-school as well as high-school students to serve.
A young resident who identified themselves as Avion (or Aviar) addressed the council during public comment, urging support for a youth council as a meaningful platform to connect young people to decision-making. “This youth council is us leading with conviction,” the speaker said, emphasizing youth leadership and investment.
Council members praised Avion’s civic engagement and expressed strong support for the ordinance. After a short discussion highlighting the value of engaging young people early in civic leadership, the council moved for final adoption and the ordinance passed unanimously.
Staff will carry out the ordinance change and integrate middle-school representation into the youth-council selection and outreach process.
