Westland launches public review of Parks & Recreation 2025–2029 master plan and schedules classes

Parks & Recreation Director Kyle Mulligan told the Westland City Council the department will offer winter drawing and painting classes beginning Jan. 9 for children and adults, a beginner Tai Chi class starting Jan. 22, and that pavilion and Farmers & Artisans Market rentals for the summer season will be available starting Jan. 3.

Mulligan also announced the draft 2025–2029 Parks and Recreation master plan is in a 30‑day public review period. The plan is posted under the Westland Spotlight section at cityofwestland.com, and hard copies are available at City Hall, Jefferson Barnes, the Westland Library and the Friendship Center. “The feedback we receive is essential in shaping the future of our parks and ensuring that they meet the needs and aspirations for the Westland community,” Mulligan said, adding residents may email comments to kmulligan@cityofwestland.com through Jan. 9, 2025.

Why it matters: The master plan guides park investments, programming and maintenance priorities across the city for the next five years. Mulligan told council that public input will shape final priorities and that the department wants to ensure programs meet age‑range and accessibility needs. The announcement also included practical details about class times and ages: the children’s drawing class for ages 5–12 runs 4:30–5:30 p.m.; the adult class runs 6–8 p.m. on Thursdays, Jan. 9, 16, 23 and 30. The eight‑week Tai Chi course meets Wednesdays 9:30–10:30 a.m. from Jan. 22 through March 12.

Next step: The draft will remain open for comment through Jan. 9, 2025; Mulligan said the department will review submissions before finalizing the plan.
