Councilmember Jim Jolly announced Dec. 2 that he will resign from the Livonia City Council effective at the end of the meeting and received prolonged tributes from colleagues. Jolly, who said he was appointed nearly nine years earlier to complete a term, reflected on local projects he helped advance and thanked his family and fellow council members.
Jolly described his time on the council as a series of learning opportunities and highlighted several accomplishments, including work on Taddington Trail, installation of all-access playground equipment at city parks, and the neighborhood grant program. “I love you all,” Jolly told the chamber as colleagues rose to offer remarks and congratulate him on his next step.
Council members praised Jolly’s legal mind and community service. A colleague who has served with him called his selection to a judicial role well deserved and said Jolly’s experience will serve him in that office. Council President McCullough (name recorded in roll call) and other members said they expect to present formal gifts and to keep lines of communication open with Jolly after he leaves the council.
The council did not take formal action related to Jolly’s seat at the Dec. 2 meeting beyond the public recognition; the council noted a vacancy will be addressed through the mayor’s office and existing procedures. The meeting adjourned after brief closing remarks.
