Council appoints representative to engage in Sozo Health license appeal before Jan. 14 public hearing

The council on Dec. 17 appointed Councilman Jonathan Lafferty to serve as a council representative to meet with city staff and the petitioner, Sozo Health Inc., ahead of a scheduled public appeal hearing on Jan. 14. Counsel explained Sozo's license renewal had been denied under a city ordinance and the petitioner appealed to council.
City counsel said the issues are complicated, involving building‑code and carbon‑dioxide/pumping use and that the petitioner's attorney suggested the hearing could be 90 minutes. The petitioner waived the 30‑day scheduling requirement so the appeal could be heard at the Jan. 14 council meeting. To avoid a lengthy hearing immediately after the holidays, Schroeder recommended a council representative work with administration and the petitioner and report back to the full council.
Councilwoman Moore nominated Councilman Lafferty, who accepted. "He's familiar with the situation, going back a long time so I think he's probably the best position to handle that," Moore said. The nomination was approved by roll call vote.
The council also discussed possibly streamlining appeal processes next year so the council is not placed in the position of resolving detailed technical code issues.
