New Berlin city attorney Mark Blum to step down; partner named successor

City Attorney Mark Blum, in his final meeting on Dec. 10, told the New Berlin Common Council he will step down as its appointed city attorney after more than 22 years of service and that his law partner, Tom Schmitzer, will become the appointed city attorney effective Jan. 1.
"I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to each of you," Blum said, thanking council members, staff and his family. He said he will continue to provide legal representation as needed but described the upcoming change of appointment as the completion of a long tenure.
Council members and staff responded with tributes and light-hearted remarks; the council president thanked Blum for his years of service and wished him well. No formal vote on the appointment was recorded during the public portion of the meeting; Blum said his partner would assume the appointed role effective Jan. 1 and indicated the transition would be finalized with the usual administrative steps.
Blum described the legal work he provided as being "in what I believe was in the best interest of the city," and thanked his office staff and family for their support. The council did not debate the appointment during the floor remarks that evening and moved on to other agenda items.
