The Wauwatosa Plan Commission unanimously recommended approval of a conditional use permit for an adult day program operated by the Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin at 1215 Dewey Avenue.
Planner Mr. Pinon told the commission the program would use existing classroom and activity space at the Carmelite Ministry of Saint Teresa and operate Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., with periodic evenings and weekends for special events. "The facility will utilize existing classroom and activity space from the Carmelite Ministry of Saint Teresa," Mr. Pinon said.
Dawn Neuffer, appearing for the applicant, described the program’s services: "An adult day program is, helping individuals with disabilities lead their most thriving lives. We teach life skills, employment skills, recreational sports, social skills training, help get them placed in the community with good jobs," and said the program looks forward to being a good neighbor.
A parent, Peter Leffel, spoke in strong support, saying he was "extremely thrilled" the association is locating in Wauwatosa. Commissioners moved to approve the CUP subject to staff conditions and voted unanimously.
