Committee approves Wauwatosa share for Mayfair Road sidewalk in DOT resurfacing project

WAUWATOSA — The Financial Affairs Committee on Wednesday approved state municipal agreements with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to add a 6-foot sidewalk on the east side of Mayfair Road as part of a DOT resurfacing project scheduled for about 2029–2030.
City staff told the committee the DOT will resurface the corridor and agreed to build a sidewalk where none currently exists, so long as the city provides a local cost share. "The DOT is paying for approximately 70% of the sidewalk cost," staff said, and the city's construction share is an estimated $183,000, a figure staff said will be refined during the design phase.
Engineers had considered a wider multiuse trail but concluded the existing right-of-way is too narrow at the golf course; acquiring land and relocating tee boxes would require redesign and add roughly $1 million in costs. Staff recommended a 6-foot sidewalk that stays within the current right-of-way.
Committee members generally supported the project as a relatively small portion of an overall $9 million paving effort and noted it would improve pedestrian access near transit stops. Members also discussed a potential amendment to a local ordinance that currently limits bicycles on sidewalks to 24-inch wheel diameter, should the council want to accommodate more bicycle types on narrower sidewalks.
The committee moved and approved the municipal agreements; the chair recorded the aye and the motion passed with six members present. Staff said maintenance of the new sidewalk would follow existing city maintenance agreements along Mayfair Road.
