Idaho SHPO tells Meridian commission about CLG grants, training and archives access

Dan Eberhard, who said he works for the Idaho SHPO, gave an overview of the agency—s responsibilities including managing National Register nominations and a federal tax incentive program for income-producing historic properties. He described the national program—s structure and the 1966 National Historic Preservation Act that established the framework for state and local preservation partnerships.
Eberhard said Idaho SHPO receives roughly $1,000,000 annually from the National Park Service and must regrant at least 10% of that funding to CLG partners—about $100,000 statewide. Alexis Mitrone, the SHPO—s new certified-local-government coordinator, told the commission the 2025 CLG grant application is open and closes at the end of January; SHPO funding priorities include preservation plans, which the SHPO ranks highly in solicitations.
Commissioners asked practical questions. Dan said the State Archives are open to the public (reading-room hours roughly 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Tues.–Sat.) and maintain digitized collections online; he also explained that SHPO keeps a small overage cushion so it can guarantee regranting at least 10% annually and that outstanding grants are a factor but not an absolute bar to new awards.
Alexis described planned training and outreach: SHPO funds NAPC (National Alliance of Preservation Commissions) memberships for CLGs, runs monthly webinars, and is planning a rotating "camp" training in Payette in late spring/early summer to bring in trainers to multiple regions of Idaho.
