DDA staff presented branding options and an outreach plan for a proposed social district along Macomb Street and asked the board for input on resident survey questions and meeting formats.
Ross explained the social district concept — shared public areas where licensed businesses can sell drinks that can be carried within a designated common area — and reviewed branding options from the DDA’s graphic designer. He said staff plans to ask residents who live along Macomb Street (including the Colony and nearby apartments) whether they support a social district, what questions or concerns they have, and whether they would attend an informational meeting; Ross said he expects to use mailers, a possible QR code, and in-person meetings on Macomb Street to gather feedback.
Ross noted the need to run a resolution process similar to prior efforts and that liquor-license changes for some businesses (he referenced the Michigan Liquor Commission website and a pending license sale by Ume) mean the district’s membership could change. Board members suggested holding a visible meeting on Macomb Street and doing direct mailers to encourage participation. Ross said staff will follow up and return with materials next month.
