Owosso resident denies alleged Jan. 6 involvement, urges council to focus on local needs

Christopher Owens, a local resident who identified his address and community roles, used his public-comment time at the Oct. 7 Owosso City Council meeting to respond to an allegation that he had participated in the Jan. 6, 2021 U.S. Capitol breach.
Owens said he received a Sept. 25 message from someone who described themself as a current council member alleging Owens was an enthusiastic participant in the Capitol breach and that the sender claimed Owens had shown photos outside the Capitol. Owens strongly denied the claim, said he had attended two presidential speeches (for Barack Obama and Donald Trump) but had not entered the Capitol, and challenged the accuser to provide evidence. He said he prefers to ask about rumors directly rather than spread misinformation.
Owens also urged the council to focus on local operational priorities, including fixing nonworking fire hydrants, sewer issues, police and fire equipment upgrades, road maintenance, and helping veterans and unhoused community members. He closed by asking elected officials to focus on city problems rather than personal allegations.
