Council advances Ordinance 1302 to Jan. 2 public hearing, citing potential industrial development and jobs

The Escanaba City Council on Dec. 19 approved the first reading of Ordinance No. 1302, a zoning amendment to establish or modify a light-manufacturing district, and set Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025 for the second reading, public hearing and potential adoption.
Administration said the ordinance originated with the Planning Commission and that the commission recommended it unanimously. Staff said the zoning change responds to a proposed development near North 30th Street (between Sixth and Ninth Avenues), where a prospective user—described in the record as compatible with the proposed zoning—would create jobs and use existing infrastructure. Administration said the rezoning is consistent with the master plan and could support “north of a 100 jobs altogether” if approvals and site work proceed.
Council moved for the second reading and public hearing date; the roll call vote supporting the date and advancing the ordinance carried with council members present voting yes.
The item will return to council on Jan. 2 for the second reading, public hearing and possible adoption, after required public-notice steps and planning commission conditions (site plan approval and possible wetland permitting) have been addressed.
