Trumbull County approves ARPA grants for ambulance, park improvements and childcare facility

The Board of Trumbull County Commissioners approved several one-time ARPA grants Dec. 11, 2024, including $175,000 to McDonald for an ambulance, $34,000 to West Farmington for ballfield upgrades and $175,000 to Mecca Township for a facility to support childcare and after-school programming.
The Trumbull County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 11 approved a series of one-time grants funded through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocations to bolster local emergency services, recreational facilities and childcare capacity.
Among the approvals, the board allocated $175,000 to the Village of McDonald to purchase an ambulance for the village fire department, saying the vehicle is needed to respond to increased call volume since the COVID-19 pandemic. The board also approved a $34,000 grant for improvements and upgrades to the baseball fields at the West Farmington Village Park.
Commissioners approved Mecca Township’s $175,000 grant to assist construction of a township facility that the board said will be used in part to provide affordable child care and after-school programming through AltaCare Group or a similar provider. Commissioner discussion praised Mecca’s application and noted the township saved funds to make the project viable.
Two smaller ARPA awards were approved: $25,000 to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul toward expanding food assistance and $5,990.63 to the Warren Amateur Radio Association for a field trailer and repeater upgrades.
All of the grants and the associated implementing agreements were presented as one-time ARPA expenditures and were approved by roll call. The board noted that ARPA legal counsel and the prosecutor’s office had reviewed the agreements and that remaining eligible ARPA balances were being allocated before the federal deadline.
The board said checks for approved ARPA awards would be prepared and recipients invited forward for presentations. Next procedural steps for grant execution include formal agreements between the county and each recipient and standard administrative oversight from ARPA counsel and county staff.
