Blackstone Public Library wins PLA digital literacy grant to teach 30 learners

The Blackstone Public Library received a competitive Public Library Association (PLA) digital literacy grant and will use the $5,000 award to deliver classroom-style digital skills training for a minimum of 30 learners.
Library Director Lisa Cheever told trustees on Dec. 9 that the PLA award is competitive (50 small libraries were selected nationally) and that the curriculum—sponsored by AT&T through PLA—includes courses such as Microsoft Word, online safety and setting up email accounts. Cheever said she is the person listed in the grant application to teach the courses and that she will train other staff if the workload requires delegation.
Trustees asked whether the classes are one-on-one or classroom-style; Cheever confirmed the grant requires classroom instruction rather than one-on-one sessions. She also said she has attended online trainings for the grant and that at least one more training session was scheduled.
Cheever also provided a broader programming update: the library discontinued its PressReader subscription due to cost and low local use and plans to trial NewsBank as an alternative for newspaper access. She reported Hoopla circulations and other usage statistics but noted year-end numbers were still incomplete. The board discussed outreach programs, upcoming children’s and adult events, and the Friends’ support for paying guest instructors for new clubs such as a photography club starting in January.
Trustees praised staff for their work on recent holiday programming and the annual report draft; director Cheever requested edits by Jan. 3 so she can finalize the report for town submission.
