At the Dec. 9 meeting the Parks & Recreation Committee reviewed several grant and improvement items: an extension for an AARP community garden grant, a grant‑writer engagement and updates on playground signage and field lighting.
Chair told the committee the AARP garden grant deadline was extended to April to allow planting after winter and to launch a resident-led garden club; she said, “we have the extension until April.” The committee also reported a meeting with Capital Strategic Partners, a grant‑writing firm, that reviewed objectives including field fertilization, concession/restroom facilities with ADA considerations, basketball court resurfacing, walking trails and field lighting. A project manager from the firm who previously served as a mayor was noted as part of the team.
On field lighting, the chair read correspondence that a youth soccer organization (BMYSO) received only a partial award from a US Soccer grant program and would need to raise roughly $20,000–$25,000 to complete a lighting project; committee members suggested stacking grants and exploring other lighting funding sources.
Separately, staff confirmed playground signage posts are in hand and final inspection of parking‑lot striping and handicap signage is being coordinated with DPW. The grant writer will return to present possible grant opportunities for the committee to consider.
