Council issues proclamations, recognizes staff and approves appointments on consent agenda

At its Sept. 17 meeting Gainesville’s council recognized Dr. Cynthia Park’s retirement, proclaimed Gainesville Reads Day and Constitution Week, recognized HR recruitment efforts, and approved several appointments and minutes on the consent agenda; all consent items passed unanimously.
Gainesville’s mayor and council used part of their Sept. 17 meeting to issue community proclamations, recognize city staff, and approve routine appointments and minutes on the consent agenda.
Dr. Cynthia Park of Grace Episcopal Church offered the invocation and said she will be retiring from public ministry after 10 years at Grace Episcopal. She thanked the community and urged continued work on inclusion and civic cooperation: "the biggest thing that's going on at Grace Episcopal right now is me leaving… I will be, formally retiring from public ministry." Councilmembers and others thanked Dr. Park for her service.
The mayor read a proclamation declaring Sept. 30, 2024 'Gainesville Reads Day' and also proclaimed Sept. 17–23 Constitution Week, citing the local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter and federal recognition in 1956.
A councilmember invited human resources staff to be recognized for recruitment and retention efforts, noting roughly 20 recent benefit roadshows and an observed reduction in turnover. Named staff included April Trammell, Kim Leon, Russ Grikson, Sarah Wilson Britt (recognized for code enforcement work) and Vicky Fox Wilson (retiring soon).
On the consent agenda the council reappointed Casey Graybill and appointed Mike McGraw to the airport advisory committee, appointed Elizabeth Horton to the historic preservation commission, and approved minutes for the Aug. 15 work session and Aug. 20 mayor and council meeting. Each item received a motion, a second, and a unanimous vote in favor.
Abbott Hayes called for public comments and reported none. City manager and attorney reported no additional items and the mayor adjourned the meeting; no executive session was held.
