Parks board weighs maintenance needs, grants and approves handicap porta‑potty at Roosevelt

At its Aug. 12 meeting the Parks & Recreation Board reviewed maintenance and repair priorities, staffing shortfalls and several small capital and program items.
Members said summer helper staffing was reduced compared with prior years and asked staff to produce a list of projects completed and those left undone to support next year’s budget request. The board discussed acquiring grounds equipment — including leaf blowers, push blowers and possible vacuums or truck-mounted units — and asked staff to gather price estimates and compare options at the next meeting. Ultaplay was expected to supply a playground maintenance checklist to guide purchasing decisions.
The board reviewed bench quotes (one estimate cited at $2,410 for a memorial bench) and confirmed that a memorial bench at Velati had been received and would be installed with Adam coordinating placement. Cameras at Roosevelt have been installed and will connect to the police station; Tabizi camera orders were reported in progress. Chair members also briefed the board on a pending AARP grant of $5,000 intended to build raised beds and a cistern for a senior-center garden; staff and community garden partners will lead construction and maintenance plans with volunteer help.
On sanitation, the board voted to place a handicap-accessible porta‑potty at the Roosevelt playground through approximately the end of October to serve visitors while permanent bathrooms remain closed. Members discussed siting to allow DPW access and view from cameras; the motion passed by voice vote. The board also discussed programming options for adult fall events and use of Water Balloon Wars funds for activities such as a paint night or game nights in partnership with PACC.
The board asked staff to follow up on pricing, scheduling, coordination with DPW on utilities and to ensure purchased equipment is compatible with long‑term maintenance plans.
