Planning advisory panel approves rezoning at 2311 Fort Benning Road to allow Columbus Tech lot combination

The Planning Advisory Commission on Dec. 18 unanimously approved a request to rezone 1.47 acres at 2311 Fort Benning Road from General Commercial (GC) to Residential Office (RO), a change the applicant said is a formality to permit a lot combination with an adjacent RO-zoned parcel owned by Columbus Technical College.
Planning staff told the commission the parcel’s future land-use designation is not strictly consistent with the proposed RO zoning but noted a mix of commercial, multifamily and vacant properties in the area that would make the rezoning acceptable. Chris Bridal of EMC Engineering, who also said he serves on Columbus Technical College’s board, told the commission the college plans a teaching and training space (a vector center) that would complement nearby CDL training and help transition soldiers leaving Fort Moore into civilian jobs.
No members of the public spoke for or against the request. Commissioner Tollings moved to approve the rezoning; the motion was seconded and carried by a unanimous vote. The commission’s recommendation will go to the planning department and, if favorable, onward to Columbus City Council for council consideration per the city’s review process.
