Fifth graders from Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School in Wyandanch asked the Town of Babylon board to install water refill stations in parks to reduce plastic bottle use and keep people hydrated in summer.
Kaylin, one of the students, told the board the refill stations would reduce single‑use plastic and help people stay hydrated during warm months; she noted stations may need to be turned off for winter to prevent frozen pipes. A second student, Mark, said reusable metal bottles are better for the environment and described microplastics concerns.
Lori Farber introduced the students and said they all live in Wyandanch and had gathered signatures supporting refill stations. The presiding official said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, who the transcript identifies as the parks committee chair, will take the lead in meeting with the students, local organizers and the Suffolk County Water Authority to explore installing stations at Wyandanch Park, Geiger Plaza and another site.
The board did not take a formal vote on the proposal at the meeting; the deputy supervisor was named as the point of contact to pursue the request.
