Committee backs rule allowing more virtual continuing-education hours for podiatrists

The Joint Government Operations committee voted Dec. 11 to recommend a rule amendment from the Board of Podiatric Medicine that increases the number of continuing-education hours that may be obtained virtually.
Olivia Johnson, legislative liaison for the Tennessee Department of Health, told the committee the packet "amends rule 1155 dash 04 dash 1.2 by increasing the number of continuing education hours allowed annually... from 5 hours to 7 hours that can be obtained virtually." She said licensees will still be required to obtain 15 total continuing-education hours annually and that, after the amendment, only eight hours will be required to be obtained in person.
The board had approved the amendment unanimously in the summer; a prior filing attempt was refiled due to a technical error. Committee members offered no substantive questions and there was no public comment.
Action: The House approved the item by voice vote; the Senate recorded five ayes and the committee moved the packet out with a positive recommendation to be included in the omnibus bill.
Next steps: The amendment will be included in the omnibus measure for final legislative consideration.
