Before the official portion of the Sept. 18 meeting, Councilman Duane Gregory and Supervisor Schaffer recognized organizers and participants in the town's annual soldier ride and presented a $25,000 check to the local nonprofit identified in the meeting as "Poise of War." Councilman Gregory said the ride has raised about $1.6 million since 2008 and that last year raised a record $178,000.
Representatives who joined the stage included Gail Holt, Ray Meyer and Mike Colano. Former Suffolk County director of veteran services Tom Ronain also attended and thanked organizers and town leadership for supporting the event.
Supervisor Schaffer thanked the volunteers and residents whose donations and sponsorships support the ride and the nonprofit's work. No formal board action or vote was required for the ceremonial presentation.
Next steps: The nonprofit will receive the presented check; organizers said they plan to continue the annual event in future years.
