4‑H reports enrollment gains and awards; Chamber updates volunteer visitor center and annual meeting

Erin Pershing, who identified herself as the county 4‑H extension educator, reported the 2024 program year opened Oct. 1 with 151 enrolled members: about 121 youth aged 8–18 and 30 cloverbuds (younger members). Pershing said 36 members are brand‑new to 4‑H this year and that the program is working on recruitment through school flyers, social‑media features and local events. She described upcoming events including a "passport to 4‑H" new‑member dinner and a holiday make‑and‑take session; she also highlighted awards at the state, regional and national levels for her extension newsletter and promotional materials.
Henry Nestle, president of the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, briefed commissioners on the visitor center (currently volunteer‑run and undergoing minor interior refurbishment), the chamber’s new executive director and membership recruitment efforts. Nestle asked the county to partner with the chamber on business recruitment and possible concession terms for bringing in new industry.
Commissioners congratulated Pershing on regional and national recognition and urged support for recruitment events.
What’s next: 4‑H will continue outreach and run December events; the chamber will hold its annual meeting the coming weekend and finalize leadership transitions.
