Foundation reports investments in early childhood, entrepreneurship and small‑town grants for Nicollet County

A representative for the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) gave an annual update to the Nicollet County Board on Aug. 27, describing the foundation’s regional priorities and recent local work.
SMIF focuses on three primary areas—early childhood, entrepreneurship and small‑town initiatives—and continues to rely on a mix of local contributions (about 10% of its budget) and externally raised resources. The presenter said the foundation brings roughly $5.5 million in funds to support programs across its 20‑county South Central/Southeastern Minnesota region each year. Examples cited for Nicollet County included early education grants to local providers (Saint Peter and Saint Peter Lutheran School, Saint Peter Community Child Care Center), donated books distributed through partnerships with publishers and a small‑town grant to Lafayette for downtown bandstand improvements.
SMIF also described business lending and COVID recovery work: the presenter said the foundation distributed more than 2,000 business recovery grants in partnership with the state’s economic development agency and that around 63 of those grants went to Nicollet County businesses. The foundation noted entrepreneurship supports for immigrant and minority entrepreneurs through local partners and a recent training series for early‑childhood providers that drew about 250 regional participants.
Commissioners thanked the presenter and asked whether SMIF planned to widen its focus; the presenter said SMIF will remain centered on its three priorities under a new five‑year plan while remaining open to opportunistic shifts if the board directs.
