NIU board accepts $40 million gift commitment, approves naming of new Health Technology Center

The Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees approved the university’s recommendation to accept a $40,000,000 gift commitment from the Bostart Family Foundation and to name the planned facility the Bostart Bowell Health Technology Center.
President Freeman described the gift breakdown: $10,000,000 identified to close the construction cost gap, $14,000,000 for future programmatic development including faculty endowments and student scholarships, $14,000,000 held in a restricted facility endowment for maintenance, and $2,000,000 designated for the Northern Fund to support emerging projects. The center will be built at the corner of Lucinda Avenue and Annie Glidden Road on the current site of Lincoln Residence Hall and will include community clinics in audiology, physical therapy and speech‑language pathology as well as research and teaching space.
Board members expressed gratitude and support for the transformational gift. Chair Gales called the motion to approve the naming and the motion carried by voice vote.
The board’s action authorizes university staff to proceed with naming recognition and continue planning for the facility; details on construction timeline and project management will be addressed in subsequent board materials.
