The Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees unanimously confirmed Dr. George Middlemist as the board treasurer during the special meeting. The confirmation follows the university’s practice of designating the chief financial officer to serve as treasurer and ratified actions taken by Middlemist since he began his employment.
President Freeman outlined the legal basis in NIU law and the board bylaws for the appointment and recommended board confirmation. The university also requested endorsement to acquire a fidelity bond of no less than $500,000, to be secured through the Illinois Department of Central Management Services or an appropriate alternative if CMS cannot secure the bond.
Board Chair Montell Gales called the question, and trustees approved the confirmation by voice vote.
The confirmation formalizes Middlemist’s role in board financial oversight and aligns the treasurer role with the university’s CFO responsibilities; the board noted the fidelity-bond requirement and that administrative steps would be taken to secure the bond.
