The City of Hampton announced on Dec. 11 that it has been awarded $20,600,400 from the Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grant Program, funded through the Inflation Reduction Act. Mayor Donnie Tuck said the award will be used in the Aberdeen Gardens neighborhood to address immediate flooding challenges and to foster economic growth through targeted green infrastructure, community engagement and workforce development.
According to the mayor’s statement to the council, the grant requires no local match and the city plans to partner with the local nonprofit Wetlands Watch to implement elements of the project. City staff will return to council in the coming weeks with details related to acceptance and appropriation of the grant funds.
City officials credited the city resiliency team and partners at Bloomberg Philanthropies for supporting the application. The mayor noted the award is intended to create a “sustainable, resilient future” for the targeted neighborhood through a mix of capital investments and workforce programming.
Next steps: staff will develop acceptance and appropriation actions and bring them to council for formal approval and budget adjustments.
