Gainesville — Downtown Gainesville has earned the Georgia Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) designation for 2025–2027, the state Department of Community Affairs told the mayor and council on Nov. 5.
Elizabeth Elliott, the downtown preservation planner with the Department of Community Affairs, said the office manages the Georgia Main Street program across the state and recognizes communities that exceed expectations in the six core standards of organization, promotion, design and economic development. She told council downtown Gainesville has attracted more than $507,000,000 in combined public‑private investment over the past three years, welcomed 58 new businesses, created 293 net new jobs and attracted about 168,000 attendees to downtown events.
Elliott presented a commemorative plaque and invited Nicole Parrham and the Main Street board and volunteers forward for photos. Mayor Sam Cuvillon and city staff joined the presentation.
What happens next: The GEMS designation runs 2025–2027; local officials said they look forward to continuing partnership with the Department of Community Affairs and the National Main Street Center on downtown revitalization.
