Council approves demolition and written findings for four homes in Sherman Historic District

After a public hearing and staff presentation, the council voted unanimously to authorize demolition of four properties in the Sherman Historic District and adopted written findings that there were no feasible alternatives to demolition.
The Sioux Falls City Council voted Aug. 20 to approve motions and a companion resolution adopting written findings that allow demolition of four properties in the Sherman Historic District: 414 West 19th Street and 1005, 1023 and 1027 South Dakota Avenue.
City staff recapped an earlier hearing (Aug. 7) and presented findings supporting demolition based on structural and safety considerations and the absence of feasible alternatives. Multiple public speakers — including neighborhood residents and representatives of community partners — expressed support for removal, calling the structures long‑term eyesores and public‑safety risks. Supporters thanked Trade Ministries and others for coordinating a plan that would remove blighted structures and prepare sites for reuse.
Council moved and seconded the demolition motion and later adopted the written‑findings resolution; both measures passed on unanimous roll‑call votes (8–0). Councilors thanked staff and community partners for their work to bring the matter to resolution.
