The Sioux Falls City Council voted Aug. 13 to create a Southern Sioux Falls Aquatics Committee and to advance a related supplemental appropriation to a future meeting.
Councilor Barranco said the seven-person committee will include five mayoral appointees representing Parks & Recreation, Planning, Public Works, the Park Board and a member of the public with real-estate experience, plus two council-appointed members. The committee’s charge is to search for optimal south-side locations and return a public recommendation no later than December.
Council approved the committee’s formation unanimously and moved the supplemental appropriation (to support site acquisition, due diligence and preliminary design) to second reading so the committee could have resources available if needed. Finance staff said some land-acquisition funds remain in the Parks strategic land-acquisition fund but the supplemental appropriation would give the committee more flexibility for professional services and due diligence.
Councilors emphasized the importance of an accountable timeline and agreed the committee should report back publicly with options and a financial package when it reaches conclusions.
