Board pauses New Haven redesign and approves restroom contract at Nelson County High School

Nelson County Board members on Nov. 12 said they will step back from redesign work on the New Haven facility project while the district resets the Local Planning Committee (LPC) and revisits districtwide financial planning.
Administrators traced the project’s history from an initial $6 million HVAC estimate to later reimagined designs and rising construction costs, and advised against making an arbitrary decision about design changes now. “To make an arbitrary decision about how much we should spend, it just seems like it’s part of a bigger picture,” a board presenter said, recommending the LPC be reseated and the district reestablish priorities before undertaking new drawings.
Separately, the board reviewed recommended modifications at Nelson County High School (restroom FMD/SMD/MSD updates). Staff said they solicited three bids and recommended the lowest responsible bidder. The recommended construction contract with Allied Plumbing was stated in the meeting at $38,746.16; the board approved revising the BG‑1 budget to approximately $40,000 and authorized the contract.
Board members said New Haven remains a high priority but agreed to defer major redesign work until after additional planning and a refreshed LPC. Facilities staff will proceed with the restroom contract at Nelson County High School and provide project updates to the board.
