Students, principals and superintendent highlight recent achievements across Estill County schools
Summary
Students presented committee work and principals reported on academic growth, events, CTE expansions and student awards. Superintendent reported improved attendance and slight enrollment growth compared with the prior year.
Students and principals used the Nov. 21 Estill County Board of Education meeting to showcase school activities and student achievements across the district.
Student leaders from West Irvin Elementary’s kindness, safety and student advisory committees described programs meant to welcome new students, check building safety and plan school events. “Our job is to spread kindness throughout the school and help everyone feel welcome,” said Miss Kennedy, a student representative associated with the kindness committee.
Principals summarized fall events and instructional gains. Speakers reported I‑Ready growth celebrations, family learning nights, combined chorus rehearsals, Veterans Day programs and readathons with student incentives. Estill Springs requested two additional 3‑D printers to expand student learning opportunities in engineering and digital fabrication.
At the middle school, staff described the arrival of Paxton Labs and a six‑lab career and technical education suite covering nursing, sports medicine, digital manufacturing, small engines, early childhood development and home maintenance systems. Middle‑school students also won awards and SAE grants. Estill County High School reported an 83% post‑secondary readiness rate for seniors and several extracurricular successes including the marching band’s Class 2A state title and FFA participation at the national conference.
Superintendent report: The superintendent reported district attendance at 92.41% (up from 91.7% last year) and overall enrollment of 2,212 including preschool. He said Commissioner Fletcher visited district schools and provided positive feedback on classroom instruction.
What to watch: Principals noted upcoming events (a Dec. 7 Christmas festival and a Dec. 14 boys basketball trip) and a request for additional classroom equipment and 3‑D printers that may appear on future agenda or budget discussions.
