Hermiston students honored for national and regional achievements; community Christmas Express highlighted

The Hermiston School District recognized student achievements and community service at its Dec. 9 meeting. Sandy McKay introduced members of the Hermiston FFA advanced parliamentary procedure team, which placed third at the national competition in Indianapolis. The board presented certificates in appreciation of the team's national finish.
Athletics director Larry Esher recognized Troy Blackburn (boys cross country coach of the year), Dan Headley (volleyball coach of the year) and Cameron Hagel (volleyball player of the year), noting Hagel will continue her career at Eastern Washington University.
The board also heard from volunteers with Christmas Express, a long-running community program run in partnership with the police department and city employees. Rick Sherman and Chaplain Cummings described the program’s logistics: schools and community groups nominate families; volunteers pack roughly 500 food boxes and wrap hundreds of toys, and families receiving toys also receive age‑appropriate wrapped gifts. Sherman and Cummings invited community donations and volunteers for upcoming boxing and distribution events.
