Centennial SD highlights $4.6M Portland Clean Energy Fund allocation and $1.3M in student-success grants

Superintendent Owens updated the board on district grants and energy funding on Nov. 13, describing both awarded funds and pending applications.
Owens said Centennial will receive approximately $4,600,000 from the Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCF) over the next five years to support capital improvements, energy-efficient equipment replacement, measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to introduce mechanical cooling at Portland-area schools.
He also reported that East Portland schools are applying as a consortium for additional PCF community grant funding that could total as much as $50,000,000; Centennial's anticipated share of any awarded community-grant funds would be about 10 percent (roughly $5,000,000). Owens said those awards are expected to be announced in early January.
Owens announced two Oregon Department of Education Student Success Plan grants were awarded to support Latinx and Indigenous/Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander students, totaling about $1,300,000 over four years; work funded by those grants will include family resource center planning (partly supported by a previously accepted $500,000 Hetherington Foundation donation), hiring family engagement specialists, and culturally specific supports and partnerships.
Board members asked about grant-writing capacity and whether to hire a dedicated grant writer; administration said the district is exploring partnerships with neighboring districts that have full-time grant positions and will further analyze return on investment before creating a permanent grant-writing role.
