Board votes to repeal local ARE retesting rule and align with NCARB policies
Summary
The board unanimously approved initiating rulemaking to repeal CCR Section 120, directing candidates to follow NCARB’s ARE retesting policies rather than the board’s 2014 rule. Staff said the repeal resolves a conflict with current national testing practice.

The California Architects Board voted unanimously to seek repeal of a locally maintained retesting rule for the Architect Registration Examination (ARE), instructing candidates to follow NCARB’s current testing policies.
Regulations staffer Tim Rodock told the board that CCR Section 120 is a holdout from 2014 and now conflicts with NCARB policy as NCARB has updated scheduling and retest procedures. "So by striking this regulation, we will be following by default NCARB policies," Rodock said.
Board members moved and seconded the proposed repeal and opened the item for public comment; none was received. Secretary Gladstone called the roll and the motion carried unanimously. Staff will submit the repeal text to the Department of Consumer Affairs for agency review and, absent adverse comments, proceed with formal rulemaking steps.
The repeal is administrative in character: it removes a board‑specific scheduling rule so that NCARB’s national policies govern ARE administration for candidates choosing California as their jurisdiction.
