On Nov. 6 the Alamosa City Council approved Ordinance 29‑2024, an amendment to city code removing distance restrictions that previously limited where alternative secondary and online school campuses could locate in the Central Business District. The council adopted a version that preserves distance requirements for liquor stores and wholesale licenses; the vote was 6–1 with Councilor Carson opposed.
City staff said the change responds to a district request and is tied to broader amendments allowing schools in the downtown by conditional use. Aaron Lemberger, speaking by Zoom, told council that while advisory groups were split, the change would support downtown vibrancy and the school district’s long‑term reuse of an otherwise hard‑to‑fill building.
Council discussed nuances in liquor licensing and the practical effect of lifting distance requirements; staff and council clarified that the amendment does not permit liquor stores in the CBD where they are otherwise prohibited by zoning.
