Sustainability division presents vision, cites more than $1 million secured for programs

City sustainability staff presented a draft vision for the Sustainability Division Dec. 10 and reviewed the division's functions, recent accomplishments and funding wins.
The draft vision reads in part: "Englewood is a resilient, responsible, and resourceful city where built and social systems adapt to current and future needs..." Staff said the division seeks to advance greenhouse gas reduction projects, support local green businesses, and secure external funding; they noted the division helped secure more than $1,000,000 for sustainability initiatives this year.
Commissioners recommended adding language to more explicitly reference the natural environment and equity considerations. Staff agreed to "massage" the wording to include natural, built and social systems and to call out the commission's advisory role where appropriate.
Staff also summarized upcoming items including a fleet grant going to City Council, a waste summit for council members and planned resiliency workshops. Commissioners and staff agreed to include the commission more explicitly in communications and to continue integrating commission feedback into the sustainability work program.
