Port Aransas Wins TML Municipal Excellence Award; City Manager Outlines New Automated Beach Trash System

The Nueces County Commissioners Court on Oct. 28, 2015 recognized the City of Port Aransas for receiving the Texas Municipal League Municipal Excellence Award in the public works category and heard a presentation from David Parsons, identified in the meeting as the city manager.
County staff read the resolution noting Port Aransas's custom-built trash truck — developed with Equipment Southwest — which includes a Freightliner body, stainless-steel components, balloon tires and a robotic arm to empty 300-gallon toter-style cans. The reading said the city had moved from manual collection to an automated system.
David Parsons told the court the new system increased capacity "about 12,000 gallons" to "about 55,000 gallons" and reduced labor needs: where the city previously had "3 men working 12 hours" to handle 12,000 gallons, the new system required "1 man working 3 hours to 4 hours" to handle 55,000 gallons. Parsons said the result is a cleaner beach, fewer worker injuries, and that the city hopes to implement the system in a county park with assistance from county staff (Scott Cross).
The court congratulated Port Aransas and recorded a motion and second to adopt the recognition; the judge asked staff to follow up. The recognition was adopted by voice vote and concluded with thanks and a recommendation to explore county–city partnership for the automated trash system.
