Sargent said initial "train the trainer" sessions occurred in October 2024 and that roughly four trainers exist across district sites. He described capabilities and controls: sensitivity can be adjusted to avoid false alarms for ordinary items such as binders and thumb drives, each pillar operates independently (no hardwired connection required), and the units run on rechargeable battery packs for event or outdoor use.
On operational requirements, Sargent said units perform rapidly in tests but require staffing: the vendor recommended two to three people per station for efficient flow. He estimated Central High would need two stations and four to six additional security personnel; larger campuses or multiple entry points could require more staff. Sargent acknowledged the district currently lacks sufficient security personnel to operate the systems at scale and said additional hires or reallocation would be necessary.
Board members probed throughput, asking whether multiple pillars could be linked to create several lanes of screening; Sargent said pillars can be deployed in parallel and controlled centrally through the vendor app, but stressed that realistic morning and lunchtime staffing needs are higher than simple per‑station test rates suggest. He urged truly random deployment if the district trialed intermittent coverage to avoid predictable patterns and equity concerns.
Several trustees raised broader trade‑off questions about how to allocate limited funds between security technology and counseling or mental‑health supports. One board member asked for evidence on the effectiveness of detection systems versus investments in counselors; Sargent said he could provide vendor documentation and case data that suggest detection systems act as a deterrent, but acknowledged evidence exists for both strategies and that a combined approach may be ideal when funding allows.
Sargent also said the detection systems detected simulated threats during training and that local law enforcement participated in some trials. He recommended further training for board members and staff so trustees could experience the system in operation before wide deployment.
After questions, the board thanked Sargent for the presentation; no formal vote on districtwide deployment occurred during the study session. Sargent and administrators noted next steps would include staffing analysis, pilot plans and vendor documentation to support cost‑benefit decisions.
