Board adopts updated weapons policy requiring expulsion hearing if student brings firearm on campus

The Huron School District 02-2 board adopted Policy AF, an update to the district's dangerous-weapons policy replacing former policy JFCJ. Administrators told the board the change is intended to ensure the district complies with state law.
Superintendent Dr. Steinhoff said the change adds a requirement that if a student brings a firearm onto school grounds "an expulsion hearing has to start," and he noted he had emailed staff and families about the update. "This policy is required for us to be in compliance with state law," Dr. Steinhoff said, and he told the board the change is effective as of the meeting.
The board moved, seconded and voted to approve Policy AF on its second reading. No amendment to the policy was made during the vote.
The superintendent said staff and families had been notified of the update prior to the vote. The board did not take additional action beyond adopting the revised policy at the meeting.
