Huron School Board adopts multiple policies, reviews ASBSD legislative positions

The Huron School District 02-2 Board of Education approved a set of policy updates and reviewed a slate of legislative resolutions to guide its delegates to the ASBSD assembly. The board voted to adopt policies GBEC (use of alcohol, drugs and controlled substances), GBGA (district involvement and political activity), GHCDE (administration of medical cannabis to qualifying students), KMI (relations with political organizations) and GCDB (criminal background checks).
Board members conducted second readings of the policies and approved each by voice vote. A separate policy revision on dangerous weapons in schools was presented as a first reading and will return at a subsequent meeting for a second reading and possible adoption.
During new-business discussion, trustees reviewed numerous ASBSD (Association of School Boards of South Dakota) legislative resolutions that had been consolidated or moved into standing positions. Topics covered by the resolutions and standing positions included state-funded preschool; compulsory attendance language and cooperative funding; curriculum adoption rules; school finance and capital outlay; property tax and state revenue collection; school safety; and a new standing position opposing the use of public funds for nonpublic education or voucher-style programs.
Board members signaled support for sending delegates with guidance on the consolidated positions. The board chair instructed their delegate to carry the district's positions to the ASBSD delegate assembly. The board is scheduled to meet next on Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m. to continue routine business and any remaining agenda items.
