"Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are unalienable rights in which governments were created to protect," he said, repeating language from the Declaration of Independence as a frame for officials' duties.
Following the address, the judge administered oaths one by one. Individuals who recited the oath aloud included Kenneth Elrod Newsome, who swore to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Utah" and to discharge his duties with fidelity; Carrie Jeffries, who repeated the same oath as Iron County recorder; Lucas Adam Little, who recited the oath and was discussed in the meeting as serving as treasurer for the year; and Nicole Rosenberg, who recited the oath for the office of Iron County treasurer as recorded in the meeting. Each oath concluded with congratulations and applause from those present.
After the oath administrations, participants arranged for group photos and for the judge to sign and seal certified copies of the oath documents. Meeting participants discussed logistics for distributing the certified copies and for placing the official seal on the documents later that day.
The ceremony was brief and largely ceremonial: Judge Little framed the work of county officials with a short lecture on leadership and character, and the meeting concluded with photo opportunities and administrative steps to finalize the sworn documents.
