SHAC reviews wellness packet, county health programs; October minutes approved

The School Health Advisory Committee heard Harris County Public Health program highlights, reviewed the updated wellness and health policy packet, approved October minutes (motion by Mister Lawrence; second Sarita Augustine) and set the next meeting for Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m.
Teresa Rayner, speaking for the School Health Advisory Committee at the district’s December meeting, reminded attendees that the meeting was being recorded and outlined administrative items, including distribution of the updated wellness and health policy packet and the October minutes.
"We have the wellness and health policy and plan" in the packet, Rayner said, and the packet reflects updated 2024–25 nutrition and physical-education guidelines. Committee members were asked to review the materials and to complete an evaluation form in the packet.
Michelle Cajero of Harris County Public Health told the committee the department offers school-based services that can support district efforts, including nutrition and physical-activity presentations, tobacco and vaping prevention classes, Narcan demonstrations and lead-poisoning prevention programs. "We do have school based services as well," Cajero said, and she placed flyers on the meeting table for teachers and parents.
On routine business, a motion to approve the October minutes "as written" was moved by Mister Lawrence and seconded by Sarita Augustine; the committee approved the minutes as written. Rayner announced the next SHAC meeting will be Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 11:30 a.m. Attendees were also provided contact information for scheduling clinic appointments (281-628-2050) and shown a list of clinic locations serving Galena Park students, including a pediatric dental clinic at Cloverleaf Elementary that serves ages 0–18.
No votes were taken on policy changes at the meeting; presenters and staff encouraged attendees to use the flyers, packet materials and contact numbers to arrange services and follow up with providers.
